El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has announced a bold move to strengthen the country’s talent pool by offering 5,000 free passports to highly skilled individuals.
The initiative, equivalent to $5 billion in the country’s passport program, aims to attract scientists, engineers, doctors, artists, and philosophers from abroad.
Bukele emphasized the significance of this endeavor, noting that while the number may seem small in relation to the population, the impact of these immigrants’ contributions could be substantial.
These individuals will be granted full citizenship status, including voting rights, without posing any logistical issues, he assured.
In addition to citizenship, El Salvador plans to facilitate the relocation process for these skilled migrants by providing various incentives.
Measures such as 0 percent taxes and tariffs on moving families and assets, including valuable items like equipment, software, and intellectual property, are part of the relocation package.
However, this move comes against the backdrop of growing concerns about human rights issues in El Salvador, particularly regarding the government’s crackdown on gangs.
According to reports, nearly three-quarters of the country’s gang members have been apprehended since Bukele initiated the crackdown two years ago.
Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro disclosed that efforts are underway to track down the remaining estimated 25,000 gang members, some of whom have fled the country’s borders. While acknowledging the high arrest rates, concerns have been raised about the proportionality and human rights implications of Bukele’s methods.
Despite criticism, Bukele remains steadfast in his approach, vowing to continue the crackdown until the remaining gang presence is eradicated.
His reelection in February for another five-year term indicates a commitment to his agenda, despite opposition from human rights groups.
As El Salvador opens its doors to skilled migrants, the government faces the challenge of balancing its security measures with efforts to attract talent and foster economic growth.
