On Sunday, January 28, a patient received the first brain chip implant from Neuralink, a company led by billionaire Elon Musk. Musk announced this development on social media the following night.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved human trials for brain implants in May 2023. By September, Neuralink began seeking volunteer participants.

Musk, on his social media platform, revealed that Neuralink’s inaugural product is named “Telepathy.” This device enables users to operate electronic gadgets, including computers and smartphones, using their thoughts.

Musk highlighted that the initial focus is on individuals who have lost limb functionality. He envisioned a future where someone like the late Stephen Hawking could communicate more rapidly than an average person. The patient who underwent the implant is reportedly recovering well, with early results indicating successful neuron spike detection.

Neuralink’s study involves a robot that surgically inserts a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) implant. This device is placed in a part of the brain associated with movement intention.

The primary aim of this initial trial is to assess the safety of both the implant and the surgical robot.

As of this report, Neuralink has not disclosed further information about the patient or the specifics of Sunday’s procedure.

When Neuralink opened its volunteer program, it targeted individuals paralyzed due to cervical spinal cord injuries or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
