Sheikh Nuru Khalid, the leading Imam of Abuja’s Apo Jumat Mosque, has been suspended for criticizing Buhari over the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.
Sheikh Khalid was suspended by the mosque committee for a sermon he delivered on Friday.
Sheikh Khalid, whose full name is Sheikh Muhammad Nuru Khalid, lambasted President Mohamadu Buhari’s administration in the sermon for failing to address the country’s rising insecurity and deaths.
During his sermon, the 62-year-old Iman urged the government to defend citizens’ lives.

Iman Sheikh Nuru Khalid’s message to Buhari;
- “Nigeria is facing a very serious challenge. People are dying, our roads are not skilled, most part of the country is scared and the government is always telling us what we don’t understand: that they are doing their best and we deserve more than that. That is what I always say. Yes, you stated that you are doing your best, but we, as citizens, believe that we deserve more.
- We want a secured Nigeria and what you are now telling us is that your concern is all about the 2023 election and what I’m advising the citizens to do is to send a message that yes, we are going to vote in 2023 but under the condition that there must be security in Nigeria.
- If that’s the only language you understand, we’re going to speak it because our lives are important. We are people. We want to live in dignity. Our wealth is important, too. Every part of us is important. Therefore, you must do something to save our lives and to make our security workable.
- We cannot afford to be moving like this with people bombing our trains, killing our people, kidnapping our people as if there was no government in the country. They can gather information, gather intelligence information, dispatch information, and dispatch intelligence information as if they were a government of their own while our government cannot share intelligence information.
- Stop the rubbish in our way. We can’t afford it. I said it. We can’t afford it. We need something better than this and we deserve that thing better than this. We’re going to pray, but we have to tell you the truth.
- Corruption is everywhere. That is why we are saying this. Allah said, “If your servant asks you about me, I’m close, I’m near, and I answer the supplication of supplicants if they supplicate unto me.” So supplicate to Allah so that you will change your situation.“
The Daily Trust reported The letter, which Senator Saidu Muhammed Dansadau, the chairman of the mosque committee, sent to BBC Hausa Service in response to Sheikh Nuru Khalid’s sermon, stated the committee suspended the beleaguered imam for his speech, which it believed to “incite public outrage.”
What Iman Sheikh Nuru Khalid wrote to Saidu Muhammed Dansadau
- “I am informing you that you have been suspended from leading prayers in the Apo Legislative Quarters Mosque from today, April 2nd, 2022, until further notice.”
- The decision was taken out of the inciting Friday sermon you delivered on April 1st, 2022, where you advised people not to vote in the 2023 general elections unless politicians respond to some critical questions.
- “You should have advised them to vote out those that transgress the Almighty and breach people’s social contract as well as the state.”
