Celine Ndudim and Afiba Tandoh were best friends living in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. They loved adventure and meeting new people.
One day, they met Andrew Amaechi on Facebook. Andrew seemed charming and successful. He often posted about his big mansion in Aba, Abia State, and his successful business.
Andrew invited Celine and Afiba to visit him. He sent a video message saying, “Hi Celine, how are you? How have you been? How was your trip? You have to bring your friend. I’m in Aba now. I live in Aba. I’ve got a new office here. I live in this great big mansion. Got six bedrooms. So let’s talk. I will send some money. Just get a taxi, an Uber, a Bolt. Come spend the next few nights with your friend. We will have fun. Go out. Have some food, okay. Yeah, I live in a beautiful, beautiful house.”
Excited about the trip, Celine and Afiba decided to visit Andrew on April 27, 2024. They set off with high hopes, looking forward to a fun time. However, things took a dark turn after they arrived in Aba. Their families and friends soon realized something was wrong. Celine’s sister, Tessy, received a frantic call from one of Celine’s friends saying that Celine and Afiba had been kidnapped by Andrew.
Tessy immediately traveled to Aba to report the incident to the police. She shared everything she knew, including the WhatsApp messages and the video Andrew had sent. Despite her efforts, the police did not take immediate action. They assured her that the investigation was a gradual process and that the girls were likely safe.
Afiba’s husband, who was in Ghana, was equally distraught. He had been trying to reach his wife ever since she left for Aba. Afiba had been a loving wife and mother, and her sudden disappearance left a void in their family. He appealed to the authorities and the public to help find his wife and her friend, believing that they were still alive.
Days turned into weeks, and there was still no sign of Celine and Afiba. Nigerian activist Harrison Gwamnishu got involved and revealed that N1 million had been withdrawn from one of the women’s bank accounts. He also discovered that Andrew had sent similar video invitations to other women, but none had accepted his invite except Celine and Afiba.
Frustrated by the lack of progress, Tessy petitioned the Police Zone 9 in Umuahia. This led to a more thorough search in the area where the girls were last seen. During this search, the police found a car matching the one seen in the hotel CCTV footage. It was parked near a building associated with Andrew.
On May 31, the police arrested Andrew Amaechi. Despite finding Celine and Afiba’s belongings in his possession, Andrew refused to reveal their whereabouts. The situation became even more distressing when a decomposed body was found wrapped in cloth near Andrew’s house. The body had been beheaded and was missing other parts. The police announced that DNA testing would be conducted to confirm the identity of the body.
Tessy was convinced it wasn’t her sister, as the timeline did not match. The families of Celine and Afiba continued to hold onto hope, praying for their safe return. They urged the authorities to take more action and bring Andrew to justice.
