On Tuesday, November 24, 2021, we were all riveted to our phones when Grammy announced Wizkid’s nomination for Best Global Music Performance, with other African musicians including as Femi Kuti, Burna Boy, Terms, and Angelique Kidjo.
To God be the glory, in less than 60 seconds, his album Made In Lagos was nominated for Best Global Music Album at the 64th Grammy Awards ceremony.
The Recording Academy set him up against Legacy + by Femi and Made Kuti, Mother Nature by Angelique Kidjo, and Voice of Bunbon Volume I by Rocky Dawumi.
Many fans and fellow celebrities in the entertainment industry congratulated the Nigerian superstar, while others criticized Angelique Kidjo, claiming she may be an impediment.
On the 3rd of April, the 64th GRAMMY Awards was held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
To the surprise of many, Wizkid’s highly rated “Made In Lagos” album lost to Angelique Kidjo’s “Mother Nature” album.
What was supposed to be a blessing to Africa’s music industry has now led to hate and envy on social media.
Fans of afrobeat music took to social media to heap insults on Angelique Kidjo, accusing her of bribing the Grammys to win the award.
The 61-year-old singer locked her comment section on Instagram. Despite doing that, they took to her old post and continued to insult her.
The question is;
Why Does Angelique Kidjo Keep Winning Grammys?
According to a Twitter user letter to Jack, Angelique Kidjo dropped an album in which the headline song talked about the dangers of climate change induced disasters (that the west is worried about) and how they will impact Africa more.
That’s a big cap. Angelique Kidjo didn’t win Best Global Music Album at the Grammys for singing about climate change.
There are millions of people in the world who sing beautiful songs about the earth.
The Grammy is just like any other award; just as Nigerians boycotted the Headies due to corruption, many American celebrities are boycotting the Grammy.
To me, I think Grammy stands for “who you know.” Who is your clique? Who do you roll with?
Why?
Because Deborah Dugan, the first female president and CEO of the Recording Academy, which presents the Grammy Awards, stated on Good Morning America in January that the Grammys are rigged. Watch the video here.
