Godwin Emefiele’s attempt to have the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami stop him from running for President was formally rejected by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Why: The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) urged the High Court to intervene and block INEC and the AGF from barring him from running for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023.
- Emefiele’s lawyers argued that because he is a public servant and not a political appointee, Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act, as changed in 2022, does not apply to him.
What the court is saying:
The court ordered INEC and the AGF to appear before it on May 12 to give reasons why the CBN Governor should not be given a political establishment.
