Israel’s defense system faced an enormous challenge on Saturday night and early Sunday morning as it dealt with missile attacks from Hamas, a terrorist organization.

Iran also launched more than 300 drones at Israel during this time.

The Iranian drone assault is thought to be in reprisal for Israel’s bombing of an Iranian consulate in Syria on April 1.

Since the strike, Iran has promised to respond to Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces claimed, however, that they intercepted 99% of the missiles and drones launched.

However, until the publication of this piece, it is unknown what equipment was employed to repel the invasion.

“Defense systems are nationwide and prepared to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

According to Iran’s state news agency, the rockets outperformed Israel’s anti-missile “shield” known as the Iron Dome.

The Israeli national emergency medical service said that a 10-year-old child was critically hurt in the Negev desert by shrapnel from a drone interceptor.

A military base was also struck, although without serious damage.

The Arrow Defense System

The Arrow is a defense system developed in collaboration with the US. It is designed to intercept long-range missiles, including the ballistic missiles reportedly launched by Iran on Saturday. The Arrow has also been employed to intercept long-range missiles launched by Houthi militants in Yemen.

As per the Israeli Ministry of Defense, the Arrow system comprises two components:

  1. Arrow-2: Designed to intercept medium to long-range missiles.
  2. Arrow-3: Designed to intercept long-range missiles.

“This is one of the most advanced air and missile defense systems in the world for intercepting ballistic missiles,” the Defense Ministry said.

David’s Sling Defense System

David’s Sling, developed in collaboration with the USA, is a defense system used to intercept medium-range missiles, including those launched by Hezbollah. When introduced in 2017, the IDF stated that David’s Sling would complement the capabilities of the Arrow and Iron Dome systems.

The equipment is stationed in various regions of the country and can be activated to launch missiles aimed at neutralizing enemy threats at short range.

“The David’s Sling defense system will enhance Israel’s defense capabilities by intercepting high-quality missiles. I am confident that our combined air defense systems will bolster our effectiveness,” the IDF stated in a release.

The Patriot Defense System

The Patriot, manufactured by the United States, is the oldest component of Israel’s anti-missile defense system. This system has a notable history, as it was utilized during the Gulf War in 1991 to intercept Scud missiles launched by Saddam Hussein, the former leader of Iraq.

Today, the Patriot system is primarily employed to intercept aircraft, including drones, from distances of up to 160 km. When an enemy aircraft poses a threat to Israel’s security, the Israeli Air Force determines the appropriate response and selects the defense system to utilize. If the Patriot system is chosen, a military unit known as “Sheinav” assumes control of the operation and activates the equipment.

“Although the Patriot system is a technologically advanced system, it cannot function without its soldiers,” the IDF said in a statement. “It takes a human being to activate the system, no matter how intelligent.”

The Iron Dome Defense System

The Iron Dome, developed by Israel with support from the US, is utilized to intercept short-range rockets. Since its activation at the beginning of the last decade, this system has successfully intercepted thousands of rockets, including those launched during conflicts with Hamas. Israel has reported a success rate of over 90% for the Iron Dome.

When an incoming attack is detected, the system’s technology calculates the trajectory of the enemy rocket and assesses whether it poses a threat to populated areas. Subsequently, the system launches an interceptor missile to detonate the enemy projectile while it is still airborne.

Unlike David’s Sling, the Iron Dome is mobile and can be deployed in various locations throughout the country. Additionally, batteries equipped with interceptor missiles can be mounted on military vehicles.

Iron Beam Defense System

Israel is in the process of developing a new interception system known as Iron Beam, which utilizes a combination of lasers and GPS technology to neutralize threats.

This innovative technology is designed to navigate through dense clouds without hindrance, ensuring its effectiveness even in adverse weather conditions.

In essence, the laser employed by Iron Beam has the capability to penetrate clouds, while the GPS system ensures the equipment reaches its intended target even if communication with the Israeli base is disrupted.

According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the development and implementation of such an advanced system was a highly intricate process that spanned nearly a decade.

Israel has also highlighted that Iron Beam represents a significant advancement in interception technology, as it is more cost-effective to operate compared to existing systems.

Additionally, the IDF has emphasized the system’s precision, stating that it enables troops to target terrorist cells and vehicles with surgical accuracy, thereby minimizing collateral damage and reducing risk to civilians not involved in the conflicts.

Iron Beam is primarily designed for targeting stationary ground-based threats with known locations, such as rocket launch sites, terrorist cells, and armored vehicles.
