MAPUTO, Mozambique — In a devastating maritime accident off the coasts of northern Mozambique, more than 90 lives were lost after a fishing boat, used as a ferry, overturned while carrying passengers.
The boat, reportedly carrying around 130 people, ran into trouble on its journey to the island of Mozambique in the province of Nampula.
Authorities revealed that the crowded and unsuitable conditions of the boat contributed to its sinking, resulting in the loss of 91 lives, including many children, according to Jaime Neto, Secretary of State of Nampula.
Search and rescue operations, hindered by difficult sea conditions, have so far only found five survivors. Efforts continue as authorities work to recover the remaining victims.
Many passengers aboard the boat were prompted to travel to the island amidst panic sparked by incorrect information about a cholera outbreak.
Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest nations, has faced significant challenges combating the disease, recording approximately 15,000 cases and 32 deaths since October, with Nampula bearing a heavy burden.
As investigations into the tragic incident unfold, questions arise surrounding the circumstances leading to the shipwreck. Authorities pledge to determine the cause, offering insight into the events that led to the loss of so many lives.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates.
