Sydney, Australia (MANDYNEWS) — A terrible incident occurred at a busy shopping center in Sydney, resulting in six deaths and multiple injuries, including a young child.
The attacker, armed with a knife, went on a rampage at the Westfield Bondi Junction mall, which was crowded with Saturday shoppers.
Police quickly responded, and a policewoman shot the attacker, ending the violence. Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke of New South Wales police confirmed the sad news, saying, “I’m told that five people have died because of what this attacker did.”
The reason for the attack is not known yet, but Cooke said they’re looking into whether it could be terrorism. Witnesses described chaos as shoppers tried to find safety in nearby stores and emergency exits.
As night fell, the area remained blocked off, and ambulances were ready to take the injured to hospitals. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed sadness, acknowledging how shocking and tragic the situation is for the nation.
Australia doesn’t often see such violence, making this incident especially distressing for the community.
