That’s when Russia took over Crimea, a place that did not belong to them. People began to see soldiers with masks and no markings on their uniforms. Many of these soldiers were from the Wagner Group.
The Boss: Yevgeny Prigozhin
Prigozhin is a big deal in Russia. He used to own many restaurants. Putin, the leader of Russia, used to eat at these restaurants. Over time, Prigozhin became powerful. He even owns many news stations.
In 2022, Prigozhin said that he started the Wagner Group in 2014. He said that it is a business that gives advice to other businesses. He also opened a big office for the Wagner Group in St. Petersburg, Russia. This is strange because Russia does not allow private armies.
What The Wagner Group Does
The Wagner Group works in many countries. They help leaders who are in trouble, like President Bashar al-Assad in Syria and President Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. They also work in many countries in Africa.
This group protects leaders and gets paid with valuable things, like diamonds and gold. They also help Russia gain power in Africa.
But, the Wagner Group does bad things too. The United Nations says they have hurt people and broken laws in many countries.
The Wagner Group in Ukraine
The Wagner Group is also working in Ukraine. They have a lot of soldiers there. Most of them are prisoners from Russia who were promised freedom if they fought for six months.
This is causing problems for the Wagner Group and for Russia. Until now, Russia has said that the Wagner Group does not exist. But now, the group’s work in Ukraine is making that hard to believe.
Trouble Between Putin and Prigozhin
Prigozhin has started to fight with Russia’s military leaders. He says they have betrayed his soldiers by not giving them enough bullets. This has started a debate about what Prigozhin wants.
