Did you get a text message from FGNigeria saying you should dial *347*757# by 31/12/2020 or for inquiries contact 09020771145? Don’t call the number and don’t dial ussd code.

Millions of people around the world have lost so much money to internet fraudsters amidst the coronavirus chaos, it seems the COVID-19 Scam are spreading nearly as fast as the virus itself.

Recall that in June this year, Hushpuppi and Woodbury reportedly stole over $35 million meant for unemployed beneficiaries in the United State of America.

As of December 16, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had logged almost 276,000 consumer complaints related to COVID-19 and stimulus payments, two-thirds of them involving fraud or identity theft. Victims have reported losing $211.3 million, with a median loss of $326, AARP reported.

Fraudsters are sending out a new format — phishing emails, texts, bogus social media posts, robocalls, USSD code and more — offering financial relief to citizens and claiming to be from the federal government of Nigeria.

“The Federal Govt. is expanding the Cash Transfer program in response to COVID-19. To enroll, dial *347*757# by 31/12/2020. For inquiries call 09020771145”

We contacted MTN and they replied; “Y’ello! Thanks for stopping by, trust you are staying safe. Kindly be informed that the service is not from MTN.”
