Grammy Awards: A Brief History
The Grammy Awards, initially known as the Gramophone Awards, have been honoring music excellence since the 1950s. The first ceremony took place in 1959 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City. The televised Grammy Awards era began in 1971. Over the years, legends like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Kanye West, U2, and Jay-Z have amassed numerous Grammy awards.
The Complex Grammy Voting Process
Unlike some music award shows that rely on public votes, the Grammys are decided by members of the Recording Academy. Here’s how the process unfolds:
Screening
Before nominations, experts from various genres screen submissions. They ensure that entries fit their respective categories. This step ensures fairness in the nominations process.
Nominations
Voting members receive ballots and are instructed to vote in their areas of expertise. Each member can vote in up to 15 categories within their specialty and the Main Four categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. The independent firm Deloitte counts the votes, maintaining the integrity of the process.
Final Voting
Final ballots are sent to voting members, again allowing up to 15 genre categories and the Main Four. Deloitte tallies the votes, and the winners remain a closely guarded secret until the Grammy Awards show.
Who Are the Voting Members?
The Recording Academy consists of over 21,000 music professionals, but only about 12,000 have voting privileges. To become a voting member, one needs endorsements from at least two current voting members and must be in good standing, paying monthly dues of $100.
Recording Academy Voting Members come from diverse backgrounds: vocalists, conductors, songwriters, composers, engineers, producers, instrumentalists, arrangers, art directors, album notes writers, narrators, and music video artists and technicians. However, the demographics have shown underrepresentation, with women at 21 percent and people of color at 28 percent in 2018.
Supporting Your Favorite Artists
While the public can’t directly vote for Grammy winners, there are ways to support your favorite artists:
- Social Media: Promote your beloved musicians on social media to catch the Recording Academy’s attention.
- Vote in Polls: Participate in Grammys polls created by music industry magazines like Billboard, which are often read by Academy members.
- Grammys Campaigns: Artists invest heavily in Grammys campaigns, including billboards and promotional packages. While fans usually don’t fund these campaigns, some fandoms have organized to help their favorite artists achieve milestones.
